Business

If you can’t see where you’re Heading, how can you get there?

It’s rainy here in Australia as I write, and it’s got me thinking about one of the things that a lot of people seem to struggle with.

That is procrastination.

Sometimes you just find it hard to get going or find it difficult to get motivated. And during the day, you find that you’re not really that productive.

One of the reasons people are not productive in my experience is they lack clarity in what they’re trying to do.

So, for example, let’s say that someone has started a business or they’re introducing a new marketing channel. Or maybe they want a new division, or they’re doing a merger or an acquisition.

Whatever it is they’re doing, they find themselves not really moving forward. That can often be because their head – their brain – is kind of slowing them down so that they really understand it – the thing they’re trying to bring into being.

So, the next time you find yourself procrastinating, ask yourself if you really understand what you’re trying to achieve that day.

Because if you have a very clear objective, when you understand what you’re trying to achieve, it’s simple to move forward.

But if it’s a bit fuzzy, then you will find that your brain will find ways to keep you occupied because it’s not sure what to do. And it’s also a very good reason why your team or your staff or partners cannot be doing what you want them to do. Because they’re not clear on what the objective is.

You might have given them this “big idea.” You may have said to them, “Okay, here’s the big blocks, here’s the flow chart, here’s the slide deck. And this is what’s going to happen. It’s going to be one-two-three-four, just like Legos.

To you, it makes sense because it’s in your head. And the people listening are nodding away because they kind of think that they’re following you. But if you really look inside those big building blocks, it’s all fuzzy for the person who has to execute it.

It’s kind of like that for yourself, too. If the execution part of what you have to do to achieve – if that goal isn’t absolutely clear in your mind – then you’ll feel a certain type of resistance.

So, what’s my point?

My point is that when you’re moving forward, you’re moving fast, so if you find yourself backing off for something, ask yourself if you’re really clear about what you’re trying to achieve.
